Abrolhos Island

An early morning flight as we had a flight over the Abrolhos Islands with island landing and snorkelling booked.

We flew in 2 light aircraft one for the original 6 and Rachel and James in their own personal plane.

We flew over to the Abrolhos Islsnds, with spectacular viewing of the three small island groupings. These were the weirdest islands I had ever seen with little to NO foliage and houses with jetties jammed onto some that were inhabitable.

There were heaps of shipwrecks in the area, the most notable being The Batavia back in 1629 with a very unsettling story of the 300+ on board. We heard stories of cannabilism and murder with mass graves still on the island. It would have been very tough to have been tossed up onto these reefs and it obviously tested those on board.

We then landed on East Wallabi Island to do some snorkelling and explore these unusual habitats. They are slowly developing this into quite a nice tourist area (albeit with none of the palm trees I expected). So far there is a beautiful boardwalk to a beach and a shelter for lunch. We had quite a trek from the plane to the shelter.

During our time there we treated to an island walk with commentary about the flora and fauna. We then had snorkel but were not too impressed with the gear and it was quite shallow and not very easy to see or know where to go. We abortive quite quickly as we had already experienced A LOT of great snorkelling.

We Then flew home with whales 🐳 sighted from the plane.

Dinner was quite a to do as we booked the tavern by leaving a message. We arrived, seated ourselves and were told that they were too understaffed to look at messages and they simply could not take our group. They said that there would be a 25 min wait between orders for each couple. We then went to a fish and chips shop. Unfortunately this too ran out of food as we were ordering. Richard and I then went to a 3rd fish and and chips shop before getting woefully lost on the way to Rachel and James unit. We played cards.
